Abstract
The first issue ofAdvances in Internal Medicinewas published in 1942. Twenty-five years have wrought many changes in the world, not the least of which have occurred in the microcosm of medicine. Doctors Dock and Snapper have been chroniclers of this striking metamorphosis. At the time of the first edition, Dr. Snapper was at the Peiping Union Medical College, the antibiotic era had just begun, steroids were not developed, and the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and concepts of genetic code remained a poorly formed dream, a decade removed from reality. One wishes that the editors had taken the occasion of this silver anniversary to relate their personal impressions and reflections of what must represent one of the most exciting periods in the development of medical science. Such an historical perspective might well be appreciated by younger physicians who have not had exposure to the longview of this period.
