Abstract
Transient blockade of glutamate N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors or excessive activation of GABAA receptors may trigger neuronal apoptosis in immature mammalian brain during the period of rapid brain growth. It has been shown that anesthetics, anticonvulsants, and drugs of abuse may induce apoptotie neurodegeneration via same mechanism and may affect the development of human brain. Key words: NMDA receptors; GABAA receptors; general anesthetics; apoptosis; brain development
