Abstract

Adult day care is a resource that families drew upon to help them cope with the care of an elderly disabled member. It enabled them to better attend to the person's needs as well as their own, and aided in improving family relationships. The older person's being male and caregivers' perceptions of the program's helpfulness contributed to the coping effects of the program. The effects of gender also appeared in relation to caregivers' long term care plans for the older person, specifically in relation to number of sons in the caregivers' family.
