ADSORPTION STUDIES ON CLAY MINERALS. VIII. A CONSISTENCY TEST OF EXCHANGE SORPTION IN THE SYSTEMS SODIUM—CESIUM—BARIUM MONTMORILLONITE1

Abstract

Standard free energies of exchange from solutions of the chlorides at 0.04N on a purified montmorillonite clay were determined for the three reactions: Cs yields Na, -2152 cal/ mole; Ba yields 2Na, -496 cal/mole; and 2Cs yields Ba, --3677 cal/ mole. These satisfy the requirement of additivity. Activity coefficients are given as functions of surface composition. (auth)
