Abstract

Epinephrine is the first line treatment for severe anaphylaxis. In case of anaphylactic shock, delay in epinephrine administration is associated with a higher risk of a fatal outcome. The preferred route of administration is intra-muscular in the thigh since it rapidly yields a higher level of the drug than when the drug is administered by the subcutaneous route. Prescription of an auto-injector and administration of epinephrine by the patient has greatly improved the management of recurrent anaphylaxis. However, the prescription of an auto-injector must always be accompanied by sufficient information and education of the patient. It is also advisable to be sure that the patient knows how to use the auto-injector correctly.
