Abstract
This chapter discusses the concept of sonship in Athanasius' soteriology. As Son of God by nature who becomes Son of Man, and bestows upon us the Holy Spirit, the Son enables us to become sons of the Father by adoption. Adopted by the Father, we are transformed; we are given a true knowledge of the Father, purity of life, and freedom from the fear of death. Athanasius stresses that our perfected life is to be lived out in the context of the church. The hallmark of that common life is to be its unity. The model for that unity is the unity of the Father–Son relation. Through the incarnation, the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit give grace to us so that as adopted sons and members of the worshipping community, we may share in the divine life that is the relation that is Father and Son.
