Abstract

Kinetics of adiabatic polymerization of acrylamide in aqueous solutions, initiated by the system K 2S 2O 8Na 2S 2O 5, has been studied by measuring the temperature rise in the reaction mixture. The initial rate of the process is given by — d[AA]/ dt = k p[ AA] 1·37 [K 2S 2O 8] 0·53· ·[ Na 2 S 2 O 5] 0·44, the apparent activation energy being 28·3 kJ/mole. The viscosity-average molecular weight M n increases with increasing monomer concentration and decreasing concentration of the two initiators.
