Abstract
In many cases, patients do not understand their prescribed medications and therefore miss the importance of taking it or the opportunity to find a more suitable medication. The combination of these patient characteristics and the typical reactive approach of pharmacies is a major contributor to the estimated $290 billion in annual nonadherence-associated costs to the health care system, according to the New England Healthcare Institute.1
