Abstract
Ade T. Milhorat was born in 1899 and died on June 26, 1997, at age 98. Most of the early obituaries focused on his role as the key founder of the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), the organization that has played the major private role for research for neuromuscular diseases for almost 50 years, and that set the pace for research programs of voluntary health agencies. This was surely an important contribution by Dr. Milhorat. But another aspect of his life warrants historical documentation. He was not a neurologist, but he set an example that had a profound effect on research for neuromuscular diseases. The formalities include an undergraduate degree from Columbia University(where he studied with Thomas H. Morgan, the 1933 Nobelist in genetics) and a medical degree from Cornell in 1928, followed by an internship at Presbyterian Hospital in New York.
