Abstract
An eminent Swedish professor of internal medicine often referred to the colon as the “Emperor” among the organs of the human body. Most likely his assessment was based on his impressions of the majestic exterior appearance of the large bowel. Had he been active a decade after his retirement, he would probably have been even more thrilled by the magnificent sights of the interior of this “imperial organ” as revealed by colonoscopy. In all likelihood, however, his enthusiasm would have been quite considerably diminished if the endoscopic sightseeing tour had been undertaken in an improperly prepared bowel!
