Study on the Information Technology-Based Lean Construction Supply Chain Management Model

Lean supply chain management, originally generated from manufacturing, has been proved to be an effective supply chain management model mainly by eliminating all forms of wastes in the entire supply chain. This paper first analyzes the status quo and major problems of our construction supply chain. Then it introduces the idea of lean construction supply chain management. Based on this, it puts forward the information technology-based lean construction supply chain management (IT-based LCSCM) model and elaborates its structure. Finally, the paper fully discusses the main issues of the implementation of this IT-based LCSCM model, including constructing lean supply chain network node enterprises and establishing lean supply chain linkages among construction supply chain parties.

Development and validation of a lean supply chain management measurement instrument

It is widely argued that to be competitive, a company not only needs to focus on internal aspects but on the entire supply chain. Lean supply chain management has become a means of enhancing competitiveness by improving efficiency and increasing flexibility at all stages of the supply chain. This research develops and validates a lean supply chain management measurement instrument. A two-phase approach is used for scale development and refinement. In the first phase, a literature review is conducted to identify definitions of lean supply chain management and agile supply chain management and their corresponding measurement items. In the second phase, the lean supply chain management measurement instrument is validated using survey data based on scales developed in the first phase by 59 scholars with experience in lean management and/or supply chain management. The results provide a structured and comprehensive measure of lean supply chain management indicating that there are two differentiated dimensions in the measurement instrument: one related to the operational aspects of lean supply chain strategy implementation and the second related to lean supply chain planning.

Dynamic Analysis of Lean and Green Supply Chain Policies in Sustainability of CHOUKA Iran Wood & Paper Industries Inc.

Sustainability of supply chain in economic systems and green supply chain management has widely attracted researchers’ attention by raising awareness of environmental effects. On the other hand, the lean supply chain is another concept whose implementation in organizations is expected to result in improved sustainability in industries. The present study aims to analyze the policy-based roles of the lean supply chain and green supply chain concepts in the corporation sustainability by designing a system dynamics model of the supply chain in CHOUKA Iran Wood & Paper Industries Inc. To this end, after a review of the literature with collaborations from decision-makers and CHOUKA data, the system dynamics model was designed in Vensim, and the model was simulated in a 10-year horizon after verification. Considering the behavior of the variables and the Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis, the model was simulated in the horizon, the green supply chain policies, the lean supply chain management and CHOUKA's business profitability were designed and applied on the model both in separate and integrative manners, the results were compared, and the behaviors of the policies were analyzed. As for the findings of the model simulation, the selected combination of the policies of lean supply chain management and green supply chain management, as well as CHOUKA’s business profitability, was proposed as the best integrative sustainability policy for CHOUKA Iran Wood & Paper Industries supply chain management. The results generally indicated that simultaneous implementation of lean and green supply chain policies leads to synergy in supply chain sustainability

Designing the performance measurement for sustainable supply chain of the crude palm oil (CPO) companies using lean & green supply chain management (LGSCM) approach (Case Study: Indonesia’s palm oil company)

One of the important activities to achieve a sustainable palm oil company is by improving the sustainable supply chain management, especially being in line with the lean and green SCM concepts. The lean concept aims to reduce costs and to increase the effectiveness of the supply chain. While the green concept tries to ensure that the ongoing process keeps bringing good effect on the environment. In designing the performance measurement of the sustainable supply chain through the lean & green supply chain management approach, this study includes a formulation for Key Performance Indicators (KPI) and grouping of the lean and green indicators which are integrated with the balanced scorecard (BSC) perspectives. It obtained 28 KPIs which consists of 15 lean supply chain KPIs and 13 green supply chain KPIs. Based on overall weighting, the highest priority KPI is the company’s total revenue and total operating costs, followed by the total cost of the supply chain (all of them are from a financial perspective). The weights of three KPIs are 0.103, 0.078 and 0.072 respectively.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to give an up-to-date and structured insight into the literature published during the past decade on sustainable green supply chain management. It also suggests trends for future research based on the research issues identified through systematic and comprehensive analysis of previous studies in the area of green and sustainable supply chain management.Design/methodology/approachA state-of-the-art literature review is carried out by systematically collecting the existing literature over a period of 10 years (2005-2014) and categorizing it on the basis of attributes such as stages in supply chain, methodology and the industries/sectors under consideration. The classification of literature is also done according to the geographic region and year of publication.FindingsThere has been an increased interest among researchers and practitioners in the area of sustainable green supply chain management in the past decade. A need for achieving sustainability through adoption of greener practices has been universally felt, owing to an increasing environmental and ecological complexity. The review reveals that there exists a need to address behavioural issues like human resource management and supply chain partner relationship management. Moreover, reverse logistics, closed-loop supply chain management and waste management are areas that need special focus to achieve environmental sustainability.Research limitations/implicationsThe current review focuses on research trends in the past 10 years only. Moreover, papers from only good quality, peer-reviewed journals are considered in the study.Originality/valueMost of the previous reviews have either focused on specific issues related to sustainable supply chains only or green supply chains. The present study collectively takes into consideration papers both from green supply chain management as well as from sustainable supply chain literature that have a prime focus on environmental sustainability.

Lean supply chain management: a contextual contingent reconceptualization and Delphi method study

PurposeThis research proposes and illustrates a conditional view of lean supply chain management (LSCM) based upon the contextual contingent alignment between lean performance objectives (i.e. a contextual factor) and supply chain management challenges (i.e. a contingent condition) in the selection of lean approaches (i.e. a contingent event).Design/methodology/approachDrawing on the notions of contingency-based practices and strategic fit, the authors’ LSCM reconceptualization jointly considers contextual and contingency factors in specifying what lean approaches to adopt. The authors illustrate the practical relevance of LSCM reconceptualization for the Canadian agri-food industry using the Delphi method.FindingsThe authors highlight that LSCM is founded upon alignment associations between specific lean performance objectives and supply chain challenges as well as their influence on the selection of suitable lean approaches. The empirical illustration shows that those alignment associations do not occur at random, which supports the conditional view of LSCM.Research limitations/implicationsThe contextual contingent view of LSCM can inform future scholarly inquiry and can reframe practically relevant middle-range theorization on LSCM.Practical implicationsThe Delphi method-derived descriptive model of LSCM provides guidance to managers in the Canadian agri-food sector in identifying suitable lean approaches to adopt given the specific performance objective(s) pursued and supply chain management challenge(s) encountered.Originality/valueThe authors advance scholarly theorization and managerial understanding of LSCM by providing a conditional conceptualization that jointly considers relevant contextual and contingency factors that hitherto have not been examined. In ascribing what lean approach(es) to adopt to the alignment associations influence between lean performance objective(s) pursued and supply chain management challenge(s) encountered, the authors provide compelling conceptual and empirical support for the joint conditional view of LSCM.

PurposeThis study aims to address Industry 4.0 (I4.0) technologies that can improve the research and implementation of lean supply chain management (LSCM) and the enhanced LSCM subfields in I4.0 technologies.Design/methodology/approachThe authors conducted a systematic literature review to detect, categorize and assess recent data, highlighting patterns and providing suggestions for potential research in this field, to investigate I4.0 literature and its effect on LSCM. The authors examined 79 published types of research from the Scopus database that were published between 2010 and 2021 and classified them into four LSCM fields: logistics, production, supply chain and marketing.FindingsThe authors can emphasize the fact that the literature on this topic is in progress, from early German academic research to the current creation of new effects around the world. The majority of the potential effects investigated were discovered to improve specific areas that ultimately enhance the practices of the four LSCM domains as well as performance outcomes. The authors were also able to assess the extent to which present and upcoming I4.0 technologies can improve LSCM research and implementation.Originality/valueTo the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the first study of its kind. Although some research looked into various areas of I4.0 and LSCM topics, there has been no research specifically looking into the impact of I4.0 on LSCM. The originality of this study lies in the treatment of the main fields and sub-fields of LSCM, which can benefit from the technologies of I4.0. Academic scholars interested in the research topics may benefit from the findings of this study. Organizations in various industrial sectors, particularly manufacturing, where lean thinking is used, business professionals specialized in lean operations and supply chain management, along with anyone else who wants to learn more about the interrelationships between I4.0 and LSCM.

Lean supply chain management in healthcare: a systematic review and meta-study

PurposeBy applying a systematic literature review, this paper aims to identify the major healthcare problem domains (i.e. target areas) for lean supply chain management (LSCM) and to provide a list of the most common techniques for implementing LSCM in healthcare. Moreover, this study intends to investigate various contingency factors that may have influenced the selection of LSCM target areas or the application of LSCM techniques by healthcare organizations.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review was carried out following the method presented by Tranfield et al. (2003). Thereby, 280 peer-reviewed journal articles, published between 1995 and 2018, were selected, profiled and reviewed. In total, 75 papers were also selected for a qualitative analysis, known as meta-study, on the basis of high relevancy to the research objectives.FindingsThis work extracts, from previous research, a set of target areas for improving supply chain in healthcare by applying lean approaches. The work also unifies the language of lean thinking and supply chain in healthcare by defining metaphors in circumstances under which healthcare organizations pursue similar objectives from their supply chain management and lean programs (Schmitt, 2005). This paper also outlines a list of applications of lean for supply chain improvement in healthcare. Finally, a set of contingency factors in the field of lean supply chain in healthcare is found via the published literature.Practical implicationsThis paper provides insights for decision-makers in the healthcare industry regarding the benefits of implementing LSCM, and it identifies contingency factors affecting the implementation of LSCM principles for healthcare. Implementing LSCM can help healthcare organizations improve the following domains: internal interaction between employees, supply chain cost management, medication distribution systems, patient safety and instrument utilization.Social implicationsThe research shows potential synthesis of LSCM with the healthcare industry’s objectives, and, thus, the outcome of this research is likely to have positive influence on the quality and cost of healthcare services. The objectives of the healthcare industry are cost reduction and providing better service quality, and LSCM implementation could be an effective solution to help healthcare to achieve these objectives.Originality/valueThe prime value of this paper lies in conducting a systematic literature review using a meta-study to identify the major factors of implementing LSCM in healthcare. Only a few other studies have been published in the literature about LSCM in healthcare.

Exploring sustainable seafood supply chain management based on linguistic preferences: collaboration in the supply chain and lean management drive economic benefits

Prior studies in sustainable supply chain management (SSCM) fail to address collaboration in the supply chain and lean management in conjunction with economic benefits. Collaboration in the supply chain and lean management have to integrate into SSCM, which involves social, economic and environmental aspects. This study aims to establish a framework to understand the seafood industry in Vietnam and to enhance its performance. This framework proposes 5 aspects and 21 criteria, and these aspects involve qualitative information. Fuzzy set theory is applied to deal with the complexity of and uncertainty in the linguistic preferences. The fuzzy Delphi method is employed to test the reliability and validity attributes. A decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory is to assess the interrelationships among the attributes. Sensitivity analysis is adopted to address subjective robustness and objective perceptions. The results show that the aspects of collaboration in the supply chain and lean management drive economic benefits.
