Abstract

The Suluk community is one of the ethnic groups in Sabah that has a culture and heritage from the time of their ancestors. Until now there are still a few communities in Lahad Datu Sabah who maintain the identity of the authenticity of wedding in their daily lives. There are several elements of pre-marriage traditions of the Suluk community that need to be examined by implementation according to the assessment of the Islamic religion. This study aims to analyse the pre-marriage tradition of the Suluk community according to the Islamic perspective. This study uses a qualitative method through a semi-structured interview method and a library method. The selection of the informants is based on those who have performed marriage customs and the elderly who are knowledgeable about local customs related to the customs of the Suluk community. The findings of the study prove that the elements of pre-marriage customs of the Suluk community exist, there are conflicting things in Islamic faith and Sharia. Like the selection of dates in the month of Safar, engagement ceremonies or weddings cannot be held to avoid being affected by plagues and catastrophes. However, there is a unique matter in the identity of the Suluk community that needs to be maintained to preserve the heritage of past generations and become a tradition for the current millennial generation.
