Abstract
In this paper, an adaptive solution scheme which applies the structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) algorithm within a Chimera grid system is presented. Using this method, a complex configuration can be easily meshed by the Chimera grid method, and each domain of the initial coarse Chimera grid system can be adapted by the AMR algorithm according to the flow solution. The advantages of the Chimera grid method and the AMR algorithm are combined. Numerical solutions of shock reflections and vortex shedding from an airfoil at high angle of attack are presented, analysed and compared with experimental results and numerical solutions from the literature. The simulations demonstrate the flexibility of the grid generation and the high efficiency of the scheme and its ability to resolve complex flow features.
