Abstract

This paper develops the themes of 'demand' for 'integrated broadband communications (IBC) services' then analyses the current state of CATV in Europe. The necessary steps in re-engineering mature CATV networks to become full service networks (FSN) in the immediate future are estimated, and a description is provided of an evolutionary strategy for transforming large and mature tree-and-branch CATV networks to IBC, using first the introduction of managed video communications tele-services, fast Internet access, and WAN 'cable-LAN-LAN' connections for fast data communications and conferencing services. Some observations are made concerning likely migration paths for distinct network types, and specific solutions known at the present time.
