Abstract
Two cases of acute leukemia associated with pregnancy in which normal infants were delivered spontaneously are reported. Both patients were treated with corticosteroids and an antimetabolite, 6-mercaptopurine. A review of the literature previous to 1943 compared to case reports since that time indicates a substantial improvement in fetal survival since the use of these drugs. The administration of antimetabolites to pregnant experimental animals consistently produces congenital anomalies in the early embryo. Congenital anomalies of the fetus have also been noted in pregnant women receiving these drugs during the first trimester of pregnancy. It is apparent, in the light of this review, that further experience in the management of acute leukemia associated with pregnancy is needed before uniformity of treatment can be attained.
