Abstract
(Obstet Gynecol. 2020;135:396–400) Genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections and poses risks to both pregnant women and their fetuses and newborns. In rare cases, HSV infection can cause severe maternal disease, including viral sepsis, encephalitis, and hepatitis. Although rare, HSV hepatitis can cause acute liver failure or death, and delaying or missing a diagnosis of HSV hepatitis can have serious consequences. This case study described an atypical case of HSV-1 hepatitis to demonstrate the diagnostic challenges associated with this disease as well as the necessity for early treatment.
