Abstract

Acute fatty liver of pregnancy (AFLP) is an uncommon, severe liver disorder leading to liver failure in women in late pregnancy. Increasingly, it is being recognized as an important and preventable cause of maternal death. Better understanding of pathogenesis, early diagnosis followed by rapid delivery of the fetus, and supportive multi-disciplinary intensive management has led to improvement in maternal mortality secondary to AFLP. Fetal outcomes remain mostly dismal in this disease.
