Abstract

The therapeutic objectives of antihypertensive drugs for acute aortic dissection (AAD) are decreasing systolic blood pressure and reducing rate of left ventricular ejection (dP/dt). Decreasing blood pressure and the shearing forces of myocardial contractility decreases intimal tear and propagation of dissection. Given the complexity of AAD, initiating the appropriate medication to achieve the optimal hemodynamic control can challenge nurse practitioners (NPs). Understanding the pathophysiology of AAD will help NPs in selecting the most appropriate antihypertensives to improve patient outcomes. This article presents an updated review of the antihypertensive drugs used in AAD based on best practice guidelines.
