Abstract
NaO0.5–SiO2–FeO slag and liquid copper containing small amounts of arsenic and antimony were equilibrated in an iron crucible under argon stream at 1523 K. The oxygen potential in the melts was measured over a wide composition range of the slag. The activity of FeO, copper solubility in slag and distribution ratios of arsenic and antimony were clarified. The results are summarized as follows:(1) The maximum positive deviation of FeO activity was observed at a unity molar ratio of Na2O to SiO2.(2) Employing the mono-cation base expression for the components, there are similarities in phase diagram between the NaO0.5–SiO2 and CaO–SiO2 systems and in the iso-activity curve of FeO between the NaO0.5–SiO2–FeO and CaO–SiO2–FeO systems.(3) Predominant copper species in the slag is mono-valent oxide even under the extremely low oxygen potential.(4) The distribution ratios of arsenic and antimony are very small under low oxygen potential, and seem to be influenced primarily by the basicity of slag.
