Abstract

Two g.l.c. columns have been prepared using the liquid crystals p-ethoxybenzylidene- p-n-butylaniline and 4,4′-dihexyl-oxyazoxybenzene as stationary phases. Specific retention volumes have been measured for a range of organic liquid solutes with the columns in both nematic and isotropic states. Infinite-dilution activity coefficients derived from these measurements are used to determine the limiting behaviours of the two-phase region of the phase diagram at infinite dilution. The activity coefficients at infinite dilution are also needed for the application of the Flory-Huggins theory to solutions of ordinary liquids in liquid-crystalline solvents.
