Abstract
1. The actions on functional refractory period and contractility of the antiarrhythmic drugs quinidine, ajmaline, sparteine, phenytoin, procainamide, lidocaine, brufacaine, propranolol, and iproveratril were determined in isolated left atria of rats and guinea-pigs. Ajmaline, propranolol, and iproveratril were the most active compounds. 2. The formal relations between concentration and effect were different in rat and guinea-pig atria especially with respect to actions on refractory period. 3. Antiarrhythmic activities were in general greater in guinea-pig than in rat atria. This applies not for negative inotropic actions. 4. Both preparations yielded, however, highly correlated ranking orders of drugs with respect of actions on refractory period and contractility, and of therapeutic indices. 5. The isolated left atrium of the rat is considered as suitable for work on antiarrhythmic drugs as that of guinea-pig.
