Abstract
The reaction of anthracene anions with methyl iodide, ethyl bromide, isopropyl bromide and tert.‐butyl bromide has been investigated. 9,10‐Dihydroanthracene derivatives and 1,2‐dihydroanthracene derivatives have been identified and isolated among the reaction products. The spontaneous degradation of the highly sterically hindered 9,10‐di‐(tert.‐butyl)‐9, 10‐dihydroanthracene is shown to give 9‐(tert .‐butyl)‐9,10‐dihydroanthracene. The mechanism of reaction is discussed.
