Abstract
Actin cytoskeleton has been implicated in numerous fundamental physiological processes, such as organelle movement, vesicle trafficking and cytoplasmic streaming. And actin dynamics is at the heart of these processes, which is controlled by the concerted actions of various actin-binding proteins. The research of actin-binding proteins lags behind that in other systems. However, with the intervention of molecular genetics and biochemical approaches, the research about actin-binding proteins in plant expanded rapidly in recent years. According to the functions, actin-binding proteins can be categorized into several classes, such as monomer-binding proteins, capping proteins, severing proteins, side-binding or/and bundling proteins. In particular, recent studies of conserved actin-binding proteins reveal the unique properties in plant, which emphasizes the importance of analyzing their functions and doing comparison carefully. In this book chapter, we are aiming to review what we know about actin binding proteins that have evolved in the assembly and maintenance of many actin-based structures in plant, and pointing out the future research direction.
