Abstract

As Congress' annual budget deliberations get into full swing, American Chemical Society has once again pointed out that adequate research funding is necessary if the U.S. is to meet its national needs. ACS also has been concerned with education, environment, and patent policies. On the budget front, ACS says in a letter to both the Senate and House appropriations subcommittees on Interior & Related Agencies that little has been done in recent years to alleviate problems related to energy security and less is being done to ensure that the nation's one abundant energy source—coal—can be used to optimum advantage. The society points out that the current Administration budget request for Department of Energy fossil energy R&D represents a substantial reduction of 30% from the fiscal 1992 level of support.
