Abstract

The American Chemical Society has recently issued several policy statements on regulations proposed by various federal agencies and on legislation pending in Congress. Representatives of ACS met with officials of the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Research to discuss the important role chemistry can play in advancing the agency's mission and the need for stable adequate funding for basic research. In a letter to the chairman of the House Ways & Means Subcommittee on Oversight, Rep. J. J. Pickle (D.-Tex.), ACS expressed its strong opposition to proposals, currently pending before the subcommittee, to change the way in which non-profit organizations calculate unrelated business income tax (UBIT) on advertising revenues generated by their publications. The proposals would prohibit nonprofit organizations from deducting editorial costs and circulation losses from their publication when calculating UBIT.
