Abstract
AbstractThe polymerization of acrylonitrile in aqueous solution in the presence of an anionic soap was examined, particular attention being paid to the size of the latex particles as a function of the extent of the reaction. It was found that in some systems the rate of polymerization became irreproducible at conversions higher than about 25%. A tendency to gel formation in systems of quite low solids content was also noted. For one system the size of the latex particles at various conversions was determined by light scattering using the dissymmetry method. The average particle size was found to be essentially constant up to about 20% conversion and to increase slowly at higher conversions.A mechanism of particle formation and growth is proposed to account for these observations.
