Abstract
Basic relations of light and ultrasound interaction as well as some examples of applications are reviewed. Starting from classical and simple description of the phenomenon as well as the traditional methods of application for ultrasonic techniques the ultrasonic light diffraction (ULD) in isotropic media in Raman-Nath, Bragg and intermediate regimes are considered. Selected applications from the literature showing wide and versatile possibilities of acousto-optics are examplified.
