Abstract

The recently completed 2571-seat Calvin C. Flint Auditorium on the DeAnza College campus is a community financed multipurpose performing arts facility located approximately 50 miles south of San Francisco. Uses range from lectures and speech-oriented presentations through a full complement of musical activities with primary acoustical design emphasis on orchestral performances. The hall is basically rectangular, with two balconies which are seven rows deep at the rear and two rows deep for the full length of the side walls. Acoustical variability is achieved by the inclusion of an orchestra enclosure and the use of longitudinally tracked sound-absortive curtains above a “visual” sound-transparent ceiling. Acoustical properties and subjective evaluations of live performances are discussed. In addition, special aspects of the sound-amplification and air-handling systems are also discussed. [Architects for the auditorium are Ernest J. Kump Associates of Palo Alto and Gwathmey, Sellier, Crosby Architects of San Francisco.]
