Abstract

In the present theoretical work, photo elastic effect in 1 μm thick potassium tantalate niobate plate has been studied under influence of acoustic wave. For this purpose a potassium tantalate niobate plate is disturbed by GHz ranged symmetric Lamb wave mode. Propagation of symmetric Lamb wave mode creates a displacement field pattern along the wave propagation direction. The displacement field pattern modifies interface between the plate medium and its surrounding. The interface modification alters shape of plate boundaries creating a strain field along the structure. Considering elastic limit of material, generated strain field is calculated. Using photo elastic relations with acoustically induced strain modification in optical index of the medium is estimated. A significant modification in refractive index of potassium tantalate niobate plate is obtained as a consequence of lamb wave propagation.
