Abstract

The velocity and attenuation of the longitudinal ultrasonic wave propagating along the a axis perpendicular to the ferroelectric b axis with frequencies ranging from 10 to 90 MHz were measured around the ferroelectric phase transition in NH4LiSO4. The data have been analysed in terms of the Landau theory including small fluctuation corrections. A crossover in the order parameter dynamics from dipole to Ising-type behaviour is observed in the paraelectric phase of NH4LiSO4. This crossover manifests itself in the specific temperature dependence of the elastic constants and sound attenuation above Tc.
