Abstract

As the most abundant aromatic biopolymer, lignin has significant potential to act as a biogenic carbon feedstock to produce valuable chemicals. For the purpose of a more complete and sustainable lignin volarization, it has become of ever greater importance to develop more efficient lignin-to-chemicals valorization strategies. As the lignin biopolymer is sensitive to acid and base chemistry, exactly these play an important role in lignin valorization. The objective of this chapter is to provide insight into various innovative lignin valorization strategies involved in lignin extraction, lignin depolymerization and related lignin stabilization strategies in accordance with acid/base mediated chemical reaction mechanisms.
