Abstract

An as-extruded Mg-5Bi-3Al-1Zn (wt%) alloy containing a coarse-grained structure and a large amount of nano-scale Mg3Bi2 precipitates showed 330 % tensile elongation-to-failure at 200 °C and 10-4 s-1. Superplasticity was mainly due to grain boundary sliding (GBS) and grain matrix slip deformation (GMD) at low and moderate strains, along with grain refinement at high strain making more GBS be activated.
