Abstract
The article considers the interrelated nature of organizational and informational structure and human effort. The article examines alternative organizational designs and information systems by classifying information systems and decision processes, explaining the current theory of information systems, and presenting empirical studies of the design of several information systems. Task-oriented system design is discussed, as are the issues of systems integration within larger organizational concerns. The article illustrates various examples of system design challenges, emphasizing the importance of three factors: task uncertainty, departmentalization, and the ease of using buffers.
