Abstract

A survey aimed at measuring the levels of achievement motivation in a population of a Home Office approved school (n = 94) and their matched controls showed that the delinquent boys scored significantly lower than their controls. This finding was further supported by a standardized interview study of the eight highest and lowest scoring delinquents and controls (n = 32). The significance of the results is discussed in terms of their relevance to current psychological and sociological explanations of delinquency.
