Abstract

This paper provides an illustration of the use of a periodic testing procedure--achievement monitoring--combined with an efficient testing procedure--item sampling--to assist the developers of a mathematics program in making formative decisions. The mathematics program was sixth-grade Patterns in Arithmetic. Details of item construction, periodic testing, and profile construction are described. In addition, how this information was used to modify materials is discussed.
