Abstract

1. 1. Acetylcholine receptors in the cercal nerve-giant fibre synapse in the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana (L.), respond to nicotine, show tachyphylaxis upon prolonged exposure to nicotine, and respond to muscarinic drugs after nicotine desensitization. 2. 2. Responses are manifested by the appearance of giant fibre action potentials and graded excitatory post-synaptic potentials. 3. 3. Both nicotinic and muscarinic receptors exist in the synapse.
