Abstract

The reception of Ruben Dario’s literature and the opinions of literary critics from the Nicaraguan’s early years to the mid twentieth century was not always characterised by an understanding of the poet and his works. An objective review of the subject means recovering not only the voices of praise from the likes of Juan Valera, the Machado brothers, Federico Garcia Lorca and Pablo Neruda, but also the contrary views of figures such as Jose Asuncion Silva, Maurice Bowra, Luis Cernuda or Gaston Baquero, who drew attention to negative aspects in Dario’s poetic world.
