Abstract

The chapter discusses the accurate and simplified design method of staggered truss system considering second-order effects. Based on the general principle of virtual displacement of nonlinear continuum mechanics, a new type of geometric stiffness matrix is presented that can consider not only the effect of axial force, shear force, moment, and torsion but also the influence of shear deformation. A simplified method is also presented for the practical design, which can use the modified results of first-order analysis to describe the response of structure displacements and internal forces concerning second-order effects. Several examples discussed in the chapter show that this method is highly maneuverable and precise, and can replace the accurate design method. At the same time, this method can also be applied to other frame structures.
