Abstract
This study in Cape Town, South Africa, examines the difficulties couples with infertility face when seeking assisted reproductive technology (ART) treatment in public and private healthcare sectors. It identifies resource discrepancies and structural barriers. The study is based on interviews with key informants, five couples with infertility, and identifies two main barriers: factors affecting access to ART (cost, inadequate medical aid insurance, culture and religion) and structural factors in government-run clinics (long waiting times and lack of modern equipment). The study concludes that infertility should be considered a serious health condition and calls for increased government engagement to improve access to fertility treatment.
