Abstract

President Hitzman, members of the Society, ladies and gentlemen: I am greatly honored to have been selected as recipient of the Marsden Award, and to stand before you tonight to receive this tribute. It’s customary in such ceremonies for the recipient to describe the events that led to the occasion, and, in keeping with that tradition, I’ll describe how “I got here” by paying my own tribute to several important individuals. Let me start by acknowledging Richard Nielsen and John Thoms. Richard Nielsen headed up the Geologic Research Division of Kennecott Exploration, Inc., my employer out of graduate school, and I got my start in economic geology under his tutelage beginning in 1974. He encouraged me to join SEG and wrote one of my supporting letters. Dick and I stayed in touch after we each left Kennecott and went on to other endeavors.
