Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to look both at the role of the university and that of the intellectuals in a Latin American society, Venezuela. They are, in fact, closely interwoven. We are going to argue here, firstly, that universities in Venezuela are academic institutions in a society which is, according to its social development, what we could call a non-intellectual society. Secondly, we will show that intellectuals in such a society cannot escape being members of the ruling class or the ruling elite, whatever the concept one chooses to apply in this context.
