Abstract

Background & Objectives: To compare the incidence and severity of postoperative sore throat (POST)in sleeve gastrectomy by using a 36 Fr bougie and a 34 Fr bougie. Materials & Methods: Forty patients scheduled for laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy were enrolled in the study. Patients were divided into two groups based onthe size of the French bougie that was used. A 36 Fr bougie was used in Group 1 and a 34 Fr bougie was used in Group 2. Each group consisted of 20 patients. Initial endotracheal tube (ETT) cuff pressure was set to 25 mmHg following intubation. ETT cuff pressure was continually monitored in both groups. The peak airway pressure and ETT cuff pressure were recorded every 5 min. Laryngoscopy and bougie complications, surgery duration, and bougie duration were also recorded. POST incidence was assessed as none, moderate, and severe. Results: The demographic variables, Mallampati scores, and bougie durations were similar between the two groups. No laryngoscopy or bougie complications were observed in either group. The duration of surgery was longer in Group 1 (P=0.03) than in Group 2. Cuff pressure at the 25th min of surgery was significantly higher in Group 1 (P<0.05)(Fig.) The POST score was significantly higher in Group 1 at 30 min. The initial cuff pressure after intubation was 46±20 mmHg and 38±21 mmHg in Group 1 and Group 2, respectively (P=0.1). The peak airway pressures between the groups were similar (P>0.05).Conclusion: In our study the Incidence and severity of POST increased with the 36 Fr bougie and we may say that POST increases with the use of larger size of bougies.
