Abstract

Aims & Objectives: Gastro Intestinal Endoscopy (GIE) is usually performed under procedural sedation and analgesia (PSA) for adequate tolerance and safety. The objective of this study is to describe our experience of PSA in patients undergoing GIE. Methods Retrospective data review conducted at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi from June 2014 to Jan 2017. Patients were between 2 to 16 years who underwent PSA for diagnostic GIE and belonged to American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) class 1 or II. All PSAs was performed by a team of pediatric intensivist and nurse according to guidelines of ASA-AAP. Intravenous combination of Ketamine and Propofol were used and all PSA were by performed by two trained personnel. Outcome noted in terms of successful completion of procedure and occurrence of adverse events rate. Results One-hundred and four patients received PSA for GIE. Mean age was 9.3 ± 3.42 years and male and females were 47% and 52.8% respectively. Most (96%) were upper GI study. 102 (98 %) had effective and successful sedation. Six patients (5.7%) had minor and reversible complications which included: 4 episodes of transient desaturation and 2 episodes of transient In 2 patients (1.9 %) patients procedures were abandoned due to development of these respiratory problems. None required advanced resuscitation care. Conclusions Our data revealed that PSA by non-anesthesiologists for GIE using ketamine and Propofol is safe and effective in children
