Abstract
Background and aims: With technological advancements centrifugal pumps have become the preferred mode for delivery of ECMO support rather than a roller pump. However, there is a lack of evidence comparing the outcome and complications between the two techniques. Aims: To compare the outcome, use of blood products and complication rates for use of Centrifugal versus Roller Pump in paediatric patients needing ECMO support. Methods: A ten year retrospective study (2002–2012) of paediatric patients (1 month-17 years) reported to ELSO Registry in our centre. Data were collected for demographic characteristics, complications rate, use of blood products and survival outcome. Results:Table 1: Demographic characteristicsTable 2: Comparison: survival and complication ratesTable 3: Comparison: Usage of Blood ProductsConclusions: In paediatric population needing ECMO, there might be improvement in survival to hospital discharge with the use of a centrifugal group. This needs further analysis. Use of a roller pump is associated with increased need for hemofiltration, complications of pump failure, more units of platelets and FFP were used.
