Abstract

Beta particles passing through matter lose energy by ionizing and exciting the atomic electrons. This energy loss is a function of electron density. The authors have shown that the loss of energy of beta particles depends also on the atomic number because, due to nuclear collisions, the path length in the absorber is increased. The absorption of beta particles in organic liquids was studied in order to see how far they show this effect. (A.C.)
