Abstract

MgO single crystals have been prepared by the skull melting technique. They are characterized by their absorption and transmission. We compare the spectra of not intentionally doped samples prepared by the above mentioned technique with those grown by the more conventional arc melting method. Furthermore we demonstrate, that the skull melting technique allows also to produce homogeneously doped samples and show some selected data of MgO:Ni, MgO:Co and MgO:Cr.
