Abstract

An absolute and sensitive method of determining uranium concentration is presented. The 63.3 keV peak of 234Th, the first decay product of 238U, is used for this study. The peak is well resolved by a hyperpure germanium Low Energy Photon Spectrometer (LEPS). The activity of 234Th is determined, with the help of a computer-based data analysis system, by calibrating the LEPS with a uranium standard. 234Th is selected because it is more apt to be in radioactive equilibrium with 238U than later members of the decay chain. The method can determine up to 5 ppm concentration of uranium in natural samples such as rock, soils, vegetation etc.
