Abstract

It has been possible to calibrate absolutely the ten-channel grating polychromator installed on PLT (Princeton large torus). Radiation from a blackbody source (eccosorb at liquid-nitrogen temperature) was chopped at 275 Hz and the signal detected using a lock-in amplifier with an integration time constant set at 125 s. A cascade of six grating filters was used to eliminate higher-order radiation from the input to the instrument. Each channel could be calibrated in approximately 2 h; under these conditions the rms calibration signal to noise for a typical channel is about 60.
