Abstract

1. A Study was made of the strength and abrasive power of grains of rhombohedralβ-boron. 2. The grain strength ofβ-B exceeds that of white electrocorundum, Elbor, and ASO diamond, but is less than that of green silicon carbide and ASV diamond. 3. In abrasive power, rhombohedralβ-boron surpasses the conventional abrasives—white electrocorundum 2.5–2.7 times and green silicon carbide 1.3–1.5 times — and approximately matches boron carbide. 4. Grains of rhombohedralβ-boron show less intense wear than do grains of white electrocorundum and green silicon carbide. 5. The wear of grains of rhombohedralβ-boron is mainly due to brittle rupture.
