Abstract
This chapter presents various aspects of bearing surface treatments and coatings, such as need for surface treatments and coatings, types of surface treatments and coatings, surface treatment of ferrous materials, and diffusion of materials into surfaces. Surface treatments and coatings are generally used on many components. The types of surface treatments and coatings include: modifying the material at the surface without altering its chemical constituents, adding a new material to the surface, changing its chemical composition and properties, and placing a layer of new material on the surface. The process of surface treatment of ferrous materials is induction hardening of medium carbon-alloy steels. The mechanism of diffusion of materials into surfaces is similar to carburizing but with addition of nitrogen as well as carbon.
